Dawn of War II - Review

by LtBowser on Feb.25, 2009, under Game Reviews

I’ve long waited for this release. :)  I already got my copy installed. I can’t wait to get home from work. I hope this works over Wippien.

Edit: Been playing single player for 2 nights already and I can’t wait to get home and play again. LOL.

Rating my single player experience.

Gameplay: This is a totally different dawn of war game. You no longer
build bases like you used to back in Dawn of War and other RTS games. This game focuses more in your heroes. You get one hero per unit type. This game feels more like WC - Dota but you get to control 4 heroes at the same time. This game is more into micro management. You need to know your units very well. What they’re good at and their weaknesses. You also need to know how to take advantage of the environment like getting your units cover behind a pile of rocks or a wall rather than having stand in the open, when to use your units abilities and which items and abilities to get for your heroes can really make a difference the game.

Visuals: The visuals here are way beyond the previous Dawn of War (of course, Dawn of War was years ago), but seriously, this one can bring your hardware to their knees if you don’t have a VC powerful enough. Check out the review video by Game Trailers and use the high details and you will see.

Overall: I’m still playing single player. (Too little time to play now, unlike before :) ). But so far I am enjoying the game. The new style of gameplay breaks away from the usual base building and build order tactics of the previous Daw of War. Players who hate micro management in RTS however might have a hard time adjusting to this game. It’s not like selecting squads and left clicking on your enemy anymore. WC3-DOTA players however will have no problem adjusting to this game. Like I said, this has similarities to dota that you go directly to controlling heroes except here, you get to controll 4 heroes at the same time.

For those who loved games like World in Conflict and WC3-DOTA. You should try this out. I haven’t tried multiplayer yet, maybe over the weekend. I am sure this game will also be a fast one. You no longer waste time building structures. Like the review said, you skip the base baby sitting part and get straight down into the best part…. killing the other side. A lot of micromanagement is needed in this game.

For those who have been following Dawn of War and its expansions. You might be disappointed with the single player part since you only get to play as Space Marines but games like these, the Single Player experience is only have of it. The other is Online Multiplayer experience and it’s looking to be a hit.

If you plan to purchase a copy of the game, support us by purchasing it from Play-Asia
