Left 4 Dead over Hamachi?
by LtBowser on Mar.04, 2009, under PC Gaming News
The answer is no. We’ve tried it and it doesn’t work. Maybe if you mess with the Hamachi alias feature but it’s just too complicated to share the instructions to a friend who just know how to play pc games. The main problem is that Left 4 Dead, like many of Valve’s games, require you to have a Class C IP address whenever you choose to play over Local Area Network. Unfortunately, hamachi does not provide you with a Class C ip address.
Anyway, to the the topic. Instead of hamachi, we will be using Wippien.
Why choose Wippien over Hamachi then? A few reasons:
1. Connection is Peer to Peer. Lesser latency compared to Hamachi or Garena.
2. Not limited to 16 users per network like Hamachi.
3. Instant messaging support
4. Free!/Open source
5. And most of all, we can configure our own IP address in the VPN that you create, meaning you can now make your own class C ip address!. (easier than Hamachi’s alias feature)
Now lets begin. (assuming you already have your copy of Left 4 Dead installed)
For 32 bit Windows Versions:
1. Download the software here
2. Install the software.
3. During signup just login as new account with this format:
yourdesiredusername@wippien.com and also include your password.
4. Click on test to create the account and if successful, you will be logged in automatically.
5. Add friends on your network
6. Host a game or Have your friends host a game
7. Join the server by manually connecting to the host’s wippien IP address or browse available games using the games’ browser under LAN.
At this point, if you have Hamachi installed, you might encounter an error telling you something about an IP conflict. Just ignore it and close your hamachi. Wippien now works exactly like Hamachi, only you won’t be creating and joining networks except you will be adding jabber IDs instead. But you still won’t be able to play Left 4 Dead over Wippien.
